You are invited to a student-led tour of the Harvard Art Museums titled

World in a Vessel

Wednesday, June 2, 2021
5:30 PM (eastern time)

Kaitlin Hao ’21 explores how three historic vessels bring us into the worlds that created them, their legacies, and their sense of the world yet to come. First, it’s the ritual food vessel (Fang ding) made in China in the 11th or 10th century BCE. Then, the stoneware storage jar that Dave the Potter, also known as David Drake, made when he was an enslaved Black man in antebellum South Carolina. And, finally, the Bauhaus teapot designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld in Germany in 1924-1925. Along the way, she talks about cosmology, trade and violence, and the intersection of art and industrialization.

The tour will be hosted in Zoom and will be in webinar format, which means that participants’ cameras and microphones will be turned off.  However, the tour is very interactive, and guests will be invited to participate and ask questions via the chatbox.

About the Guide

Kaitlin Hao ‘21 is a senior in Currier studying History of Art and Architecture, focusing on Hong Kong contemporary art. She is interested in the overlap between art and media cultures, studying topics as wide-ranging as the cross-influences between video games, anime, and contemporary art, and the role of memes in the Hong Kong protests.

About the Program

The Ho Family Student Guide Program at the Harvard Art Museums trains students to develop original, research-based tours of the collections. Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds, including art history, visual and environmental studies, the sciences, history, and literature.
